Can Long Distance Relationships Work?

Long Distance RelationshipsIs it possible to have a successful long distance relationship? Yes. Is it easy? No. But, the current economic situation is forcing some couples into long distance marriages and relationships.

Some partners are able to commute during the week, on weekends, or a few times a month. Others, because of distance, many see each other far less—or maybe just on special occasions and holidays.

If you should find yourself in a long distance marriage or relationship, we’d like to offer the following suggestions:

Make Agreements And Set Ground Rules Before Beginning The Separation

Agreements must be made about money, household expenses, etc.—all the things you would handle if you were living together. And, you must make an agreement about you’ll handle sex.

Communication Is Extremely Important In Successful Long Distance Relationships

Set aside time to talk or connect daily by phone, emails, webcams or Skype.

Have “Date Times”

Watch TV shows or movies, or read books together at the same time. Then talk about it just like you would if you were together physically.

Have “Check In” Sessions Regularly

Discuss how things are going and make whatever adjustments or agreements as may be necessary.

While most couples would prefer being together, many have found that it is possible to have a successful long distance relationship until such time that they can manage to reside together again.
