Alternatives to Marriage Counseling

Alternatives to Marriage CounselingAre you having marriage problems and looking for help? The fact that you’ve been searching the internet for help indicates your desire to find answers and solutions to your marriage problems. You’re to be congratulated!

You are probably aware that there are a lot of alternatives to getting marriage help being offered by lots of people. So, the question is, how do you choose from among everything that’s being offered? Here are a few questions you might want to consider. (1) Is the person offering the product or service married? (2) Are they currently in a successful long term committed relationship? (3) What professional specialized training, if any, do they have? (4) What experience have they had helping couples with the kind of problems you are facing? (5) What is their record of success? (6) How much does it cost?

There are several alternatives to getting marriage help. Here is a brief review of some of them:

Marriage Counseling

We recommend that you carefully select a competent licensed professional who specializes in marriage and family therapy.

Marriage Education Classes

Some are offered “on-line” as well as at some churches and religious organizations, some by marriage counselors, and some at local colleges and universities.

Marriage Teleclasses

These are offered via telephone, internet, or a combination of the two. They usually focus on some specific relationship problem or issue and are either offered “live” or by previous recording.

Marriage/Relationship DVD’s

Generally, these provide self help relationship information and/or exercises that couples can do at home working at their own pace.

Marriage/Relationship CD’s

These are the same as the DVD’s without the benefit of a video with voice sound only.

Books

Marriage books provide a wealth of information to those who prefer learning through books.

If you’re a couple who can’t talk about “sticky” issues more than a few minutes without getting upset, we suggest that you see a marriage counselor. Some couples need a personal facilitator and a “step by step” program to be successful. If you choose alternatives that involve you working “on your own,” it requires an extremely high commitment by both partners to consistently do the work to be successful.

So, you have lots of choices. Marriage help is available. Decide what feels best for you to address your marriage problems. And if you try something and it doesn’t work, try something else.
